How to Find the Hidden Singing Vortigaunt Cave in Half Life 2

How to Find the Hidden Singing Vortigaunt Cave in Half Life 2:

Many people have tried to find it but few have succeeded. Only half whispers and rumours are heard of it. Let's face it, everyone wants to know where the hidden singing vortigaunt cave is in Half Life 2, but few know how to find it. You may spend many hours searching the chapter Water Hazard and still come no closer to finding it. So here's how.

Note - The hidden singing vortigaunt cave is a bonus Easter egg in the Water Hazard chapter in Half Life 2. On the Xbox 360 you can also get an achievement for entering the hidden cave.

Edit Steps

  1. Load the Half Life 2 campaign chapter Water Hazard and play it through until the final battle with the hunter-chopper where it is dropping bombs and shooting at your airboat. This is towards the very end of the chapter.
  2. Move towards the water gate with the exploding barrels in the water before it, directly after the you destroy the hunter-chopper, and open it via the platform beside it. You must open this gate to progress further in the level so you can't miss it.
  3. Go straight through the gate with your airboat until you see two sewer outlets in the valley wall directly in front of you (they aren't far away). They will be above ground height and in shade. The left outlet's bars will be bent at the bottom with enough room to enter through.
  4. Park your airboat underneath the left, open outlet. It must be close enough to the cliff to jump on and climb through, although the cliff has built in stair-like bumps for you to hop onto.
  5. Climb up through the bent metal grating and move into the sewer slightly. It may help to turn on your flashlight to gather your surroundings, but do not waste too much charge as you will need it soon as the sewer is filled with radioactive slime.
  6. Sprint directly down the sewer without stopping. The toxic slime will sap your health, so be quick. It is possible to walk through the sewer if you have a full armour rating and health, but it is easier to sprint (to sprint hold down the Left Bumper on your Xbox 360 controller).
  7. Turn left through a gap in the sewer before you reach the end. Although it is hard to see where the gap is in the dim light of the sewer, failing to make the turn will cost valuable health if you're stuck at the end of the sewer.
  8. Continue forwards into the vortigaunt's cave. Congratulations! You have just found the hidden singing vortigaunt cave! He will be standing around a head crab roasting on a fire, singing to himself and saying philosophical thoughts. If you are on the Xbox 360, simply being there is all that's needed to unlock the Vorticough achievement.
  9. Check your Xbox 360 gamerscore and achievement statistics (if you are playing on the Xbox 360) and you will see that the Vorticough achievement has been unlocked for 13 gamerscore. It is represented by the vortigaunt with musical notes coming from it.
  10. Collect any of the health and rechargers lying around before leaving the cave. You will have to sprint back the way you came again through the radioactive slime, so make sure you have enough health and suit power to sprint through.

Edit Tips

  • When running through the radioactive slime in the sewer, throwing a few health packs inside may help to replenish your health as you're sprinting through.
  • If you can't reach the sewer entrance with your boat, get some of the crates from around the valley to stack up against the cliff.
  • If you are playing Half Life 2 on the PC, use the console commands (press the tilde ~ key, left of the 1 key, in-game or paused) and type in noclip. You will find that you can now fly everywhere without touching (clipping) anything. Instead of running over the toxic waste, you can simply phase over to the cave where the Vortigaunt is, taking no damage.

Edit Warnings

  • In some cases the vortigaunt may not be singing at all, instead just talking normally, but if you are trying to unlock the achievement then this will still count.
  • It may take some time and skill to find the cave, so be patient.
