Tutorial: Quickly Building An Action Game With Physics Using TexturePacker and Physics Editor

Tutorial: Quickly Building An Action Game With Physics Using TexturePacker and Physics Editor:

In the past I’ve mentioned the SpriteHelper, and LevelHelper tools for creating physics based games on the iOS platform.

Recently I had a chance to try out another set of tools from Andreas Loew known as Texture Packer, and Physics Editor. Originally, I held back from checking these tools out because I already had the other tools – but really they serve a different purpose.

Texture Packer, and Physics Editor are great for those times when you want to put together a spritesheet, or obtain the physics properties for a set of objects very quickly. They are not specifically built for laying out complete levels for complete games.

What I really liked was the simplicity of the tools – there’s no learning curve here you can very quickly and easily export your sprites, and physics properties.

They also support a very wide variety of formats, and game engines supporting nearly iOS every game engine that has been mentioned on this site. You also get support for Flash game development.

You can visit the PhysicsEditor and Texture Packer websites and try out the tools.

Andreas has also posted an excellent tutorial using the Texture Packer and Physics editor tools to create an action game with physics very quickly.

Here’s a screenshot of the game in action:

< You can find the tutorial in 3 parts: Pt.1, Pt.2, Pt.3.

A great way to learn how to use the Texture Packer and Physics Editor tools, you can download evaluation versions and decide whether they are for you.
