Canon EOS-1D X first hands-on (video)

Canon EOS-1D X first hands-on (video):

Professional photographers know the drill: every few years, Canon or Nikon announces a game-changing DSLR, often prompting top photogs to unload their complete kits and switch to another system in a never-ending attempt to shoot with the best. This time, Canon is first out of the gate, with its flagship EOS-1D X -- the latest in a series that dates back to 2001 with the EOS-1D. As you've probably noticed, the company's new top model looks virtually identical to its decade-old ancestor, but is otherwise a far cry from that four megapixel CCD sensor-sporting dinosaur. We've been anxiously awaiting an opportunity to check out Canon's new $6,800 18.1 megapixel full-frame model since first getting word of the beastly camera last week, and just had a chance to go hands-on during the company's Pro Solutions event in London. Jump past the break for our impressions and a video walkthrough.

Broccoli-Basil Mac and Cheese

Broccoli-Basil Mac and Cheese:

Whenever I'm away from home I keep a list of what I want to cook when I get back. Well, it actually becomes more of a nest than a list, and there's a pocket in my suitcase dedicated to keeping it somewhat contained. Unzip the pocket and you'll find menus folded in two, notes scribble on the backs of receipts, pages ripped from far-flung magazines, that sort of thing. Now that I'm home, the nest is sitting a few inches tall, smack in the middle of the dining room table. Top of the pile, a note to self to make this broccoli-basil crusted mac and cheese.

Green Mac and Cheese Recipe

It's from a new book my girl Anna Jones wrote in conjunction with innocent recently. She gave me a copy in London, and it's filled with sass, and laughs, and brilliant, nutritious, family-friendly recipes. You can have a peek here, note it hasn't been published (yet) in the U.S. Those of you who read Jamie Magazine likely know Anna's work - she writes, she styles, she develops recipes in London. She's fantastic, and it's a shame she doesn't live closer.

The recipe! Like most casseroles, it's a bit of a project. But, the sort that pays off. You end up with a huge pan of mac and cheese, unlike any I've ever tasted. Plenty for leftovers. And there are a couple of notable things that make this version unique. First off, Anna has you puree basil with a handful of cherry tomatoes, and a dollop of creme fraiche. You combine this mixture with grated cheeses to create the melty magic that envelops the macaroni. And then there's the crunchy top crust, it's made from whole wheat bread, broccoli, and more basil blitzed in a processor with a touch of olive oil. It's brilliant.

Give this a go - in the meantime, I'm working on a London round-up with more pictures. And a new favorites list, and (!) I have a stack of new cookbooks brimming with recipes flagged to try.

Amazon lockers come to NYC, no more getting caught by UPS in your PJs

Amazon lockers come to NYC, no more getting caught by UPS in your PJs:

Amazon Lockers NYC

First Seattle, then London, now the Big Apple -- Amazon's delivery lockers are starting to pop up all over. As we've explained before, the lockers are basically giant, automated PO boxes, designated exclusively for Amazon purchases. If you choose to add a locker location to your address book (go check your account settings to see if the option is available to you yet), your package will be crammed into one of these kiosks and you'll be given a code to unlock a particular slot at the location of your choice. So far there are eight scattered around Manhattan in Rite Aides, D'Agostinos and Gristedes. We haven't wandered out of our secret lair to get photographic evidence of the drop off locations yet (we prefer to have our Amazon purchases left at the gate under the watchful eye of a turret), but we think the screen shot we took is proof enough that we're not pulling your leg. Still, if you're afraid the UPS guy might swing by while you're still in your jammies this seems like a pretty nice solution.

Your mobile phone is probably covered in deadly germs

Your mobile phone is probably covered in deadly germs:
iphone4s 215x300 Your mobile phone is probably covered in deadly germs If you’ve taken delivery of a new iPhone 4S this morning, you’re probably feeling a little bit pleased with yourself right now. Well there’s another reason why your smugness levels should be higher than usual that you’re almost certainly not aware of.

That’s because, unless you’re a filthy monkey, your gleaming new phone isn’t one of the one in six in the country that are contaminated with E coli from being covered in ‘faecal bacteria’. Oh yes – that’s 16% of all the phones in the UK, according to a study by the ‘London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary, University of London’ (no, us neither).

So where are the dirtiest phones in the land? Birmingham, with 41% of bacteria-daubed phones. However, if it’s the actual hardcore E coli that you’re after, head to London. The study found that 28% of handsets in our fair capital are contaminated with the deadly bug.

There’s also a north-south divide, with northern cities being WAY dirtier than the southern ones. Glasgow, for example, is nine times germier than Brighton. We’re sure you’ll come up with your own suggestions as to why that might be the case.

Oh and it’s Global Handwashing Day tomorrow so buck your ideas up eh?

T-Rex Bigger and Hungrier Than Previously Thought

T-Rex Bigger and Hungrier Than Previously Thought: gpronger writes "Researcher John Hutchinson (Royal Veterinary College in London) and Peter Makovicky (Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago) built digital models of a T-rex and then added flesh using the structure of soft tissues in birds and crocodiles as a guide. This allowed them to project body mass. By doing this for a number of specimens of different age and size, they could also evaluate growth. At maximum, the adolescents could add 11 pounds in weight in a single day. The adult was found to be 30% heavier than earlier estimates at more than 9 tons. With the size and appetite, it would lead also to the perspective that they would need a large range, and therefore also be relatively rare in the ecosystem of the time."
