People power is all the rage these days, whether it’s a gang of protestors hanging about outside St Paul’s Cathedral or tens of thousands of music fans opting not to buy the new album by the Kaiser Chiefs.
The latest example came at Birmingham Globular Airport yesterday when 100 or so passengers staged a sit-in on a plane after they were royally dicked about by the Viking Hellas airline.
Their flight was scheduled to depart from Manchester to Athens at 13:00 but passengers were instead put on a bus and taken to Birmingham. When they got there, they boarded a plane that was scheduled to leave at 17:00 but were then asked to get off. They refused. The sit-in commenced.
The stand-off lasted until 01:30 until the passengers agreed to leave the plane and returned to Manchester on another bus. As far as we’re aware, they still haven’t made it to Athens.
A passenger called Dorata spoke to the BBC from the plane and said: “People are hungry. They have not eaten since this morning. The air conditioning has been switched off and it is getting hot. The airline will not give us food, only water.” She later said: “We decided to leave the plane because there was no point in staying on there. We are going home. We have got a letter from Viking Hellas and we can get a refund.”
Viking Hellas have so far failed to comment. The current whereabouts of either of the buses is also unknown, as is Dorata’s surname.
